Case study 4: Stanground College

Photo of tutorOur Up Your Grades strategy is now in its fourth year. It has expanded to include more than 40 members of the college staff coaching more than 60 students.

We start at the end of Year 10, assessing student performance and looking for those who might not quite achieve their potential. By early in Year 11 we have established a group of students who might benefit from personal learning coaching.

Our coaches are volunteers and include the Principal, members of the headship team, teaching and support staff.

Through the research I carried out for my CFPS qualification we made some significant developments - Personal Learning Coaches have been released from cover duties to give them time to meet regularly with learners and contracts have been issued between students, parents and PLCs.

Our scheme goes from strength to strength, many staff are willing to give up time to this valuable activity and students are approaching staff to ask if they can have a mentor.

Listen to what these Stanground students have said about the scheme:

» Student 1: Every student should have a mentor.
» Student 2: Having a coach has helped me a lot with my confidence and how to organise myself. My friends and family have seen a change in my attitude towards school, exams and revision.
» Student 3: Would just like to say a big thank you to Mrs Jones who was not only a great laugh, but was also really helpful.

And here's what one tutor says about the effect of the scheme:
