Case Study 3 : Moira - a learner
Moira was studying full time at college on a City and Guilds Sports
and Leisure course. It was a one year programme at Level 2. Most of the
students on it expected to go on to Level 3 Sports on completion.
By Christmas Moira had fallen way behind and her tutors were getting pretty fed up, they sent her to the student services officer. He said he couldn't help her that much, she didn't have problems at home or need money, but he did suggest that she take part in a personal learning coaching programme and he sent her to meet a coach.

‘ I was in a mess. I knew why I'd fallen behind. I hated that course. I joined it at the last minute because I didn't know what to do and a friend had just started it. It just wasn't for me, too much sport and talking about sport all day long. What made it worse was that the others loved it. They were nice people and I got on OK with them, but they were so sporty! I was getting more and more worried because I thought I would be thrown out and I didn't know what would happen then.
At our first meeting, I didn't tell Chloe - she's my coach - that I hated my course but when I went home I talked to my mum and said I wanted to leave. She said I should talk to Chloe first and see what she advised. I didn't think she could help but she said, as I didn't have a clue what I wanted to do, if I left I would do nothing. She said I should work at my course, I only had 6 months left and if I passed it I would be able to choose something different at Level 3 rather than starting again at Level 2 and losing a year. While I was doing the course, I could think about what else I might do and she would help me. We met every week and talked and planned. She helped me catch up and we spent time looking at information on other courses. I still didn't like my sports course but I could see now that it could lead to something else. Well, I did pass it and now I'm doing Business Studies at Advanced and it is much more fun. ’
